Hagan: Week in review
Story Date: 6/19/2011

  Source:  SENATOR KAY HAGAN, 6/17/11

Senator Hagan, Chair of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, spent a large portion of her week fighting for North Carolina servicemembers and their families while working on the Senate Defense Authorization bill. Hagan included key provisions in the legislation to protect and get answers for military families affected by water contamination at Camp Lejeune. The Senate Armed Services Committee passed that bill out of committee last night, and it is now slated for consideration by the full Senate. For more information on Hagan’s provisions, click here.

Hagan began her week in the Triangle, where she addressed the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness during an Energy and Smart Grid listening session with Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke at NC State. Hagan was also at Cree to discuss job creation. Hagan has a bill, the AMERICA Works Act, which would encourage industry to work with community colleges to create nationally recognized credential programs. Workers who earn an industry-backed credential will be marketable in any area of the country.

On Wednesday, Hagan co-sponsored the bipartisan Southeastern Disaster Tax Relief Act to give much-needed tax relief to North Carolinians working to rebuild after April's devastating storms and tornadoes. This bill is fully paid for and would establish a Southeastern disaster area comprised of counties that were affected by the recent tornadoes, severe storms and flooding. North Carolina counties eligible under this guideline are: Bertie, Bladen, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Greene, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Onslow, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson, Tyrell, Wake and Wilson.
