Happy Friday from Senator Hagan’s press office, where we wish everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July weekend!

Week in Review

This week, Senator Hagan and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), both members of the Senate committee that oversees education policy, introduced legislation to foster innovation and reform in America’s low-performing high schools and middle schools. The Secondary School Reform Act focuses on combatting the country's dropout crisis and ensuring that our schools prepare students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed upon graduation.

Also this week, the Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act, which Hagan cosponsored with Sen. Richard Burr (NC), passed out of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. The legislation would open VA health care to veterans and their family members who developed health problems after exposure to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune. The bill will now advance to the Senate Floor for consideration.

Today, Senator Hagan joined a bipartisan group of Southeastern Senators to encourage the passage of the Hagan co-sponsored Southeastern Disaster Tax Relief Act. The bill would give much-needed tax relief to North Carolinians working to rebuild after April's devastating storms and tornadoes. For more about the bill, click here. The Senators sent a letter to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Member Orrin Hatch encouraging expeditious consideration of the bill in committee so that it may receive consideration by the full Senate.
