A new campaign, Clone-Free-Food, has been launched against using cloning techniques in farm livestock in Europe.

The campaign is led by Eurogroup for Animals which wants consumers to show that they are against cloning by signing a declaration. The lobby group wants cloning banned in Europe and a trade ban on any products from abroad that are derived from cloning techniques.

Kartika Liotard MEP, who was the rapporteur of the Novel Foods directive review in the European parliament was the first signatory to the Declaration.

“It is a disgrace that European consumers are being served food produced as a result of cloning although 77 percent of them refuse to accept it according to the Eurobarometer survey. The Commission must act now and respect the wishes of Europe’s citizens and defend the welfare of Europe’s animals,” said Liotard. “We encourage as many people and organizations as possible to sign this declaration and share the information on cloning with their family, friends and colleagues.”

In a press statement, Eurogroup for Animals said that the campaign is designed to raise awareness of the issues around cloning and to show the European Commission and the European Council that not only European Parliamentarians but the society as a whole does not want food on their plates which are the result from animal suffering. The European Commission is currently preparing new legislation on cloning.
