The sixth in a series of surveys of meat processing facilities to determine the extent of the industry’s voluntary adoption of food defense plans is due to begin Friday, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

The survey will run until July 31, and will research whether meat processing facilities have adopted a food plan, and if so, whether the plan is functional.

Previous food defense surveys were conducted every year from 2006 through 2010. The initial research showed that 27 percent of surveyed establishments had a functional food defense plan, and that that rate had increased to 74 percent by 2010. FSIS has an agency performance goal of at least 90 percent of establishments with a functional food defense plan by 2015.
