A new turfgrass breeding program at North Carolina State University will be on display during a Turfgrass Field Day scheduled for Wednesday Aug. 10 in Raleigh.

The field day is sponsored by the N.C. State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and will feature N.C. State experts, who will give presentations on the latest research on growing and maintaining turf for residential lawns, golf courses and athletic fields.

The event will be held at the N.C. State University Lake Wheeler Road Turfgrass Field Laboratory, which is on Lake Wheeler Road just south of Tryon Road. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with registration and concludes at 11:45 a.m. with lunch. There is a $30 registration fee, and people who wish to attend may register online at www.TurfFiles.ncsu.edu/FieldDay. Attendees may also register the day of the event.

Among the N.C. State experts scheduled to make presentations is Dr. Susana Milla-Lewis, a plant breeder who was hired in 2009 to develop a turfgrass breeding program at N.C. State. Milla-Lewis will discuss her efforts to develop turfgrass varieties that are suited to thrive in North Carolina’s climate and other environmental conditions.

In addition, the field day will include presentations on managing pests and diseases that attack turfgrass and fertilizing turfgrass as well as information on applying paint to athletic fields. A golf putting contest is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. at the conclusion of the presentations.

While the field day is geared toward professional turfgrass managers such as landscapers or golf course superintendents, it is open to the public, and anyone with an interest in turf may find the presentations useful. The program for the event is available online.
