It was an audacious project from the beginning: Cross two wild bass species that do not mate, create a hybrid fish prized by white-tablecloth restaurants and Asian markets and help establish a nationwide network of growers. More than two decades ago, a group of researchers at N.C. State University's Sea Grant program set out to create the hybrid striped bass, a meaty fish about the size of a snapper that can be grown in ponds.
