Dear Friends,

Rebuilding our nation’s economy and putting Americans back to work has been and remains a top priority on my legislative agenda. We are continuing to focus on initiatives like “Make it in America” that focus on job growth, and we have seen some improvement in the unemployment rate in nine of the ten counties in the Seventh Congressional District over the past year.

Our nation’s businesses are a vital component of our national and local economy, and that is why I am working to provide an environment for local businesses to prosper, grow, and create jobs. Planning is well underway for two upcoming events which I am hosting to help both the employer and the employee in Southeastern North Carolina, and I encourage you to join me as we continue along the path of recovery.

NC Business & Economic Development Summit

For the 15th consecutive year, I will be joined by several of my colleagues in the North Carolina Congressional Delegation in hosting the “North Carolina Business & Economic Development Summit.” This year’s summit, entitled “Taking Care of Business” is a two-day conference which will take place in Washington, D.C., on September 12th and 13th. It is free of charge and is designed to give North Carolina’s business leaders and entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet with federal officials and discuss policies affecting businesses across the state.

I will be joined by other North Carolina Members of Congress including Representatives G.K. Butterfield, Renee Ellmers, Walter Jones, Larry Kissell, Patrick McHenry, and Mel Watt as we have an informative discussion on various business, political and economic topics. This event draws hundreds of North Carolina business leaders, Chamber of Commerce officials, and small business owners, and it puts participants face-to-face with top-level officials from the Administration and Capitol Hill, as well as political commentators and media personalities.

This year, a special feature of the program includes the new “North Carolina Executive Leadership Panel,” which will promote dialogue between participants and the CEOs of some of North Carolina’s most distinguished companies on best practices for economic recovery.

Job Seekers Boot Camp

Later this fall, I will be offering another opportunity for those who are looking to enter the work force. Being unemployed in today’s job market can be outright frightening, and on October 31 (Halloween morning), I am hosting another Job Seekers Boot Camp. This one will be held on the campus of Robeson Community College in Lumberton, and is a one-day workshop designed to give job seekers the tools they need to land a good job. Some of our area's most knowledgeable career counselors, business leaders, HR managers, and career coaches will be on hand to provide practical advice on resume improvement, interviewing, networking, and job seeking. I will be there to give an update on what the U.S. Congress is doing to create more jobs and talk with constituents about their ideas or concerns. This boot camp will not only help refine one’s skills and reignite enthusiasm, but it will also put job seekers in touch with key job resources.

There are so many pressing issues before us as a nation, but we must work together in partnership with government, private enterprise, educational institutions, and other community leaders and organizations focused on moving the economy forward. Both upcoming events are for the residents of the Seventh Congressional District, and I encourage you to register early for these events at no charge.
