U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) announced today that veteran public policy and communications strategist Mary Hanley joined her staff as Communications Director.

“Mary has extensive experience in public policy, business, government and working with the media,” said Hagan. “Her experience, including public service in two Administrations and her knowledge of Congress, will be a valuable addition to an already strong staff that is dedicated to working on behalf of the people of North Carolina.”

Hanley, who most recently worked with Prism Public Affairs, was Director of Communications for President Clinton’s Secretary of Commerce, Bill Daley, the current White House Chief of Staff.  She also served as Communications Director for the White House Council on Environmental Quality and as Vice President of Communications at The Wilderness Society, a national conservation organization founded in Asheville, NC.  As Senior Vice President of the National Association for Biomedical Research, Hanley worked closely with the biomedical and biotech research community, including many of the renowned North Carolina research institutions.  She has also served as the Public Affairs Officer in the office of the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State.

“I am honored to join Senator Hagan’s staff, an impressive and enthusiastic team that clearly reflects Senator Hagan’s passion for the state and people of North Carolina,” said Hanley. “Having already experienced the best of North Carolina’s mountains, beaches, and bike trails, I now look forward to meeting more of the people of North Carolina and helping to facilitate the ongoing dialogue between them and the Senator.

“Senator Hagan’s bipartisan approach and dedication to the state’s working families, the military, veterans and seniors is just what the nation needs.  I consider it a privilege to be able to assist in her important mission.”

Hanley joined the Hagan staff on August 9. She will work out of Hagan’s Washington, D.C., office.
