A total of 107 people between less than 1 year and 89 years old have been infected with the strain of Salmonella Heidelberg associated with an outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.

Cases are now reported in 31 states. The outbreak strain is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics. One death has been reported.

Of the 107 cases, 23 have closely related PFGE (pulsed-filled gel electrophoresis) patterns that are similar to those isolated from ground turkey samples taken from retail (as part of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System) and an Ohio patient’s home.

Cargill Meat Solutions has recalled approximately 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey from its Springdale, Ark. Facility due to possible Salmonella Heidelberg contamination.
