USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a notice (45-11) to inspection program personnel notifying them that on September 11, 2011, it will replace the Fast Antimicrobial Screen Test (FAST) with the Kidney Inhibition Swab (KIS) Test for swine carcasses at slaughter establishments that slaughter both swine and cattle and where the KIS test is already in use for cattle.

The notice changes the effective date to Sept. 11 from an earlier notice that had it starting Aug. 22.
FSIS plans to replace FAST with the KIS test in all remaining establishments slaughtering swine during 2012. Establishments slaughtering sheep and goats will be added at a later time.
