U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack yesterday announced over $660,000 in grants for 68 North Carolina agricultural producers and rural small businesses across the state to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in their operations.

"Investment in energy initiatives means investment in jobs for North Carolinians," said Hagan. "When unemployment in some rural areas of North Carolina tops 17 percent, common sense measures such as the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) can have a significant impact. I remain committed to fighting for measures that not only bring relief to rural North Carolina but also drive economic growth and foster a climate where businesses can thrive and create more jobs for North Carolinians."

REAP, a program Hagan has supported since coming to the Senate, offers funds for farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses to purchase and install renewable energy systems and make energy-efficiency improvements. Funding of each award is contingent upon the recipient meeting the conditions of the grant agreement. Grants can finance up to 25 percent of a project's cost.
