Results of research into biological nitrogen removal in poultry processing treatment facilities are now available, the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association said.

Project #660, “Assessment of Biological Nitrogen Removal (BNR) in Poultry Processing Facilities: BNR System Optimization for Resilience and Efficiency,” investigated factors that may interfere with the removal process. Tests confirmed that low temperatures are more detrimental to the nitrification process than to denitrification. The research is expected to help in the design of systems for efficient treatment of wastewater containing quaternary ammonium compounds (QUATs).

The study was conducted at the Georgia Institute of Technology as part of a research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing. A detailed summary of the research is available here.
