Animal agriculture operations were mostly spared by Hurricane Irene, even before it was downgraded over the weekend to a tropical storm.

The Charlotte Observer reported that some poultry housing was damaged and an undetermined number of turkeys were killed near Kinston, N.C. In addition, one farmer reportedly was killed while feeding livestock.
Reports from other states did not include damages or deaths related to animal ag operations. And, the Maryland State Fair resumed operations on Sunday after shutting down on Saturday. The livestock events will occur on schedule, although the livestock sale has been postponed until September.
