Today on Capitol Hill U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3), along with several other members of Congress whose districts were affected by Hurricane Irene, met with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate.  Congressman Jones was updated on FEMA’s ongoing relief efforts in devastated counties in North Carolina and the entire east coast.  Among many other topics discussed, Congressman Jones asked the administrator what is being done to ensure local contractors have an opportunity to be hired to rebuild and repair damaged areas.  Administrator Fugate assured the congressman that FEMA encourages the hiring of local contractors and the use of local products, and the hiring for these jobs is done at the state and local level.

“Many of the citizens in my district have been without jobs for quite a while,” said Jones.  “We need to make sure that they are being given a fair opportunity to bid on work to clean up damage from this storm.”

Congressman Jones has also agreed to join Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT) as co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Hurricane Irene Coalition. The Coalition is a group of members of Congress who have come together to work to make sure FEMA has the resources it needs to adequately assist Hurricane Irene victims.  The Coalition will also serve as a resource for Members to support recovery efforts in their districts.

“While national media outlets may have turned their attention to other stories, we will remain dedicated to getting the people of our districts back on their feet,” said Jones.
