Gov. Bev Perdue today appointed Congressman Bob Etheridge to serve as Special Adviser for Hurricane Irene Recovery Efforts. Etheridge will coordinate state recovery activities to help businesses, local governments, farmers and schools recover from last month’s storm.

“Bob Etheridge knows how to get the assistance we need from Washington, and he knows the needs of North Carolina’s communities, schools and farmers,” Gov. Perdue said.

Etheridge served seven terms in Congress, including serving as a member of the Homeland Security Committee, which oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the House Agriculture Committee. Gov. Perdue appointed him in February as head of the state’s Office of Economic Recovery and Investment. He will step down from that role in order to take the hurricane recovery post.

In his new position, Etheridge will coordinate efforts with the Division of Emergency Management and other agencies of state government to serve all citizens who have been affected by this damaging storm.
