Gov. Bev Perdue announced today that she has secured disaster assistance for farmers in Cumberland County.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing Farm Service Agency emergency loan assistance to farmers who suffered losses during Hurricane Irene. The loans are a result of the disaster declaration requested by Gov. Perdue immediately following the hurricane and approved by President Obama.

“We continue to actively seek all possible avenues for assistance that will help our farmers whose crops were destroyed by Hurricane Irene,” Gov. Perdue said. “I’ve seen the devastation first-hand, and met with some of the farmers and their families whose lives and futures are on the line. This financial assistance will help them get back to work.”

The inclusion of Cumberland County brings the total of counties eligible for Federal disaster assistance to 43.  The other counties designated for assistance are:  Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Greene, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Roberson, Sampson, Tyrrell, Vance, Wake, Warren, Washington, Wayne, and Wilson.

State and federal assessment efforts continue and more counties could be added later.

Gov. Perdue has also requested an expedited disaster declaration by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, who toured crop damage with Perdue following the hurricane. Such a declaration would allow for additional assistance for uninsured crops and restoration of damaged farmland.

Farm Service Agency offices in the affected counties are taking applications for physical and production losses through May 1, 2012.
