Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that she has secured federal disaster assistance for Vance County for losses suffered during Hurricane Irene.

Vance County can now seek aid covering the costs of storm response, debris removal, and infrastructure repairs. The aid, called “public assistance,” is a result of the disaster declaration requested by Gov. Perdue immediately following the hurricane and approved by President Obama.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides two types of assistance. Public assistance helps local governments with community recovery costs, such as clearing debris and repairing public facilities, while individual assistance aids families and businesses.

"We remain vigilant in pursuing any assistance available to help communities return to normal operation," Gov. Perdue said. “This help comes at a time when our communities are working hard to rebuild under difficult circumstances.”

With today's action, 37 counties have been approved for public assistance. The counties previously approved for public assistance are: Beaufort, Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow,  Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Sampson, Tyrrell, Warren, Washington, Wayne and Wilson.

Gov. Perdue has secured individual assistance for 35 counties: Beaufort, Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, Vance, Warren, Washington, Wayne and Wilson.
