U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC), along with her colleagues in disaster ravaged states, today led efforts to pass a $7 billion bill to ensure Americans devastated by natural disasters receive necessary aid. The bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 62-37, must now pass the House of Representatives.

“People in North Carolina are hurting,” said Hagan.  “This bill will provide needed assistance to our families, our communities, and our businesses suffering from the rash of natural disasters that have hit our country this year.  Now we ask the House of Representatives to step-up to the plate and come to the aid of citizens all across the eastern part of the United States.”

The bill provides $500 million in immediate, emergency funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to make sure FEMA won't have to cut off help for victims of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee at the end of the month.

Earlier in the day, Hagan questioned witnesses at a Small Business Committee hearing on how to improve government contracts with businesses of all sizes to meet disaster recovery needs.

Yesterday, Hagan spoke on the Senate floor about the urgent need to pass this supplemental funding bill to ensure the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has the resources to assist storm-ravaged communities in North Carolina.
