U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) commented today on the President’s proposed plans to create jobs and to reduce the deficit.

“Last week, I stood with 36 Republican and Democratic Senate colleagues to urge the 'Super Committee' to 'go big' on deficit reduction.  Today, the President presented specific proposals to help the Super Committee meet that goal," said Hagan.  “Our current national spending trajectory is clearly unsustainable.  On my recent budget listening tour across North Carolina, I heard over and over again that Washington needs to put the nation's fiscal future ahead of current partisan game-playing.   Balanced, bipartisan deficit reduction that follows the model outlined by the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, co-chaired by North Carolina’s own Erskine Bowles, is the way to go.

“Of course, job creation remains my number one priority.  That's why I introduced the Hire A Hero Act in February to give small businesses a tax credit for hiring our returning veterans.   I am pleased the President includes a similar proposal in his jobs plan, along with a number of other worthwhile initiatives – including investments in our crumbling roads and bridges, and extending and expanding the payroll tax credit to put more money in the pockets of hardworking families and small businesses.

“My bottom line is unchanged:  I will work with anyone in Washington to achieve practical, bipartisan solutions to help jumpstart the stalled American economy and create jobs.”
