Today Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) urged the National Park Service (NPS) to make rebuilding hurricane damaged areas of Cape Lookout National Seashore a top priority.   While NPS has reopened some parts of the Seashore to visitors, other areas – including the Long Point Cabins on North Core Banks and the Portsmouth Village Historical District – remain closed due to damage sustained last month during Hurricane Irene.  In a letter to NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis, Jones stressed the need to rebuild and reopen these damaged areas as quickly as possible.  He noted the negative economic impact that closure is having on local Carteret County businesses and families, as well as the lost recreational opportunities for American taxpayers.   

“Repairing the cabins and restoring access to all areas of the Seashore is important to helping many Carteret County residents recover from the storm,” said Jones.  “By making these issues a priority, NPS will help get businesses up and running and tourists returning, which will benefit Carteret County as a whole.”
