Today Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) urged House and Senate leaders to come together and provide the funding necessary to help disaster victims in Eastern North Carolina and across this nation. As of today, only $175 million remains in FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund (DRF). FEMA estimates this money will be used up by Tuesday, September 27th. Without congressional action to replenish the fund, FEMA assistance to individuals, states and local governments will come to a standstill.
“I strongly encourage congressional leaders to quickly reach a fiscally responsible agreement to help the towns, businesses and citizens affected by Hurricane Irene,” said Jones. “With all the economic problems now facing America, the last thing this country needs is an extended delay in the delivery of the resources needed for disaster recovery. Congressional leaders need to bridge their differences and ensure that American taxpayers have the assistance they need.”
