The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) said it has established measures to ensure compliance with safety laws of a pilot program that allows Mexican trucks to use U.S. highways, DOT told Congress in a report filed this month.

The United States and Mexican governments agreed in July to allow cross-border truck shipments after a 17-year disagreement over a provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement signed in 1994. As part of the move, Mexico removed tariffs on a long list of U.S. exports, including pork.

In August, Congress directed the OIG to determine, before implementation of the program, whether the DOT essentially had established means of ensuring Mexican trucks were compliant with safety laws.
In its report filed in October, the DOT’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it addressed all the OIG’s concerns.
