The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has issued a stop-sale order for three types of City Star motor oil after the products failed tests for viscosity standards.

The order applies to all bottles of City Star 5W30, 10W30 and 10W40 motor oil without a date code, with an illegible date code, or a date code of 5/24/11 or earlier. More date codes could be added to the list as the department’s Standards Division samples and tests additional products, said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.

“We found a variety of problems with this product,” Troxler said. “It doesn’t meet viscosity standards, and some bottles don’t contain required information listing the manufacturer, packager or distributor. In addition, because this oil is recycled from used motor oil, it should state that on its label. Unfortunately, that information is missing, too.”

The products are distributed by City Petroleum in Dearborn, Mich.

Retailers or distributors with this product in stock should return it to their suppliers. Consumers who have bottles of this motor oil should return it to the place of purchase.
