Yesterday Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) and 22 bipartisan members of the House Lumber Trade Caucus urged the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to fully and quickly enforce the U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) in order to ensure a level playing field for U.S. lumber producers, forest owners and employees.  The Lumber Agreement is currently up for extension, and Congressman Jones and his colleagues sent a letter to USTR stating their belief that it should be extended only if USTR commits to taking all enforcement actions necessary should Canada continue to violate the terms of the agreement.

“The U.S. government must stand up for and make sure that our trading partners are playing by the rules,” said Congressman Jones.  “Lax enforcement will put more U.S. workers and businesses at risk, and that’s simply unacceptable.”

Congressman Jones is a co-chair of the House Lumber Trade Caucus along with Rep. Michael Michaud (D-ME), Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR).    The Caucus supports a healthy and vibrant U.S. forestry industry through promotion of common sense trade policies that allow the free flow of goods and services on a fair and level playing field.
