Under new, stricter recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), food companies would be allowed to include just four items on front-of-package labeling. The four — calories, saturated and trans fats, sodium and sugars — reflect the growing trend among consumers over healthier processed foods.
The report, released Thursday and sponsored by both the FDA and USDA, recommends a point system that uses check marks or stars to indicate how “healthy” the food is, with three stars being the healthiest.
