Peterson's grandmother passes away

Evelyn Salter Sewell, 87, of Beaufort, passed from this life on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011. She died at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, only a few miles from Stacy, where she was born. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Beaufort, where she was a member for more than 63 years, with the Rev. John Carlisto, officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. In addition to her personal accomplishments, she had a long successful professional career of more than 40 years. She was 16 years old when she graduated Atlantic High and was enrolled in UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Pharmacy. After she graduated in 1944 and completed her internship, she returned to Beaufort to begin her career. She was the first licensed female pharmacist in Carteret County’s history. For more than 25 years she worked in retail pharmacies in Beaufort and Morehead City. She was then approached by the board of Carteret General Hospital to become its first full-time pharmacy manager, where she worked until her retirement in 1989. She was an active church member serving on the Alter Guild, Vestry and the Episcopal Church Women organization. Her faith influenced all aspects of her life. Evelyn was also active in civic and social affairs. She was appointed to the urban renewal committee working on the Beaufort downtown revitalization. As a member of the Beaufort Historical Association, she organized the Apothecary Shop when it was started on the historic grounds. She was also an avid bridge player. The family would like to express love and appreciation to Evelyn’s caregivers at Snug Harbor who did so much to enhance Evelyn’s quality of life her last year. Thank you and God bless.

She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Sewell Meadows; a son, John Benjamin Sewell III and wife Ellen; four grandchildren, Erica Peterson and husband, Terry, Kimber Brown and husband, Jared, John Meadows and wife, Michelle, Jacob Sewell and wife, Emily; three great-grandchildren, Landon, Zakery and Hayden Meadows; brothers, Major and Chris Salter; sister, Judy Lewis; and sister-in-law, Katheryn Nelson. Her parents, Elmer Salter and Ethel Fulcher Salter; sisters, Myra and Irma Salter; brother, Hedrick Salter; and uncle, Dr. Theodore Salter preceded her in death. The family will join friends in St. Paul’s Parish Hall following the service.
