NC Agromedicine Institute: Call for nominations - board of directors

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The NC Agromedicine Institute is currently seeking nominations to expand its Board of Directors. Previously composed of members representing the Institute’s three constituent universities, East Carolina, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, and North Carolina State University, the Board will now include also include the following:
-Two directors from community, faith-based, or other support organizations serving agricultural workers, small farmers and their counterparts in forestry and fisheries

-One member from non-academic and non-governmental agencies involved in the delivery of health care to agricultural, forestry and fisheries communities

-One director from the insurance industry serving the agricultural, forestry and fisheries communities

-Two directors from agribusiness (e.g., agriculture, forestry, and fisheries employers, suppliers, commodity contractors or purchasers) or commodity associations

BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES
While all Board members will assist with provision of administrative oversight for the Institute, Board members representing the community are essential in assisting with advocacy and promotion.


Advocacy and Promotion
-Provide leadership for the Institute’s fund raising activities for private gifts to Institute Foundation accounts in support of its mission.

-Advocate for the Institute, when appropriate, with the UNC General Administration (UNCGA) and the UNC General Assembly in consultation with the UNCGA.

-Assist the Institute in maintaining good relations with governmental, corporate, and commodity-based partners and in promoting Institute activities with these partners.

-Recruit new partners from governmental, corporate, and commodity-based organizations who can assist the Institute in fulfilling its mission.

-University-affiliated members promote the Institute and its programs within their home institutions. They provide effective support to Campus Coordinators

Administrative Oversight
-Provide broad programmatic oversight of the Institute. Recommend changes to Institute mission and strategic directions as needed.

-Receive, review and evaluate the Institute’s annual report and other reports and make recommendations to the Institute Director about the Institute, programs, and processes.

-Provide input for the annual performance and merit evaluation of the Institute Director (to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at East Carolina University).

-Review proposals for major projects that require significant Institute resources, e.g., becoming a NIOSH Agricultural Safety and Health Center.

-Review structural aspects of the Institute’s administrative configuration and make recommendations, as needed, to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies and/or the UNC General Administration.

-Evaluate candidates for the Institute Director position when it becomes vacant and make recommendations for appointments to this position to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at East Carolina University.

-Provide recommendations for new Board Directors.

NOMINATION PROCESS

- Individuals may be nominated for the Board of Directors by themselves or another individual. If nominating someone other than oneself, please speak with them to ensure they are willing to serve before submitting the nomination.

-Nominations should include:

- Name of person being nominated, address, phone number, and email
- Which category person is being nominated for (i.e., community, faith-based, or other support organizations, -academic and non-governmental agencies involved in the delivery of health care, insurance industry, or agribusiness)
-statement of interest in and qualifications for serving on the Institute’s Board of Directors
including how nominee can assist the Institute with Advocacy and Promotion activities
-name of individual making nomination if different from individual being nominated

Deadline for nominations is December 15, 2011 with new Board orientation anticipated in February, 2012.
