A former House member from the North Carolina mountains is returning to the General Assembly to replace a fellow Republican who resigned last weekend to head the state probation system. Republican leaders in Transylvania, Polk and Henderson counties chose five-term House member Trudi Walend of Brevard to succeed outgoing Rep. David Guice on the second ballot Monday night.
