Today Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) expressed opposition to India’s denial of access to U.S. poultry into the Indian market.  Jones and over 30 of his colleagues sent a bipartisan letter to United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk stating that the Indian government is making non-scientifically based claims about the safety of U.S. poultry and is using illegal non-tariff barriers to prohibit the importation of U.S. poultry.

“This is about American jobs,” said Jones.  “American workers need a level playing field, and this government needs to stand up to make sure our trading partners are playing by the rules.”

Industry analysts estimate that if India dropped its unfair ban on U.S. poultry, U.S. exports to India could exceed $300 million annually.  Such an expansion of export opportunities for U.S. producers would be extremely beneficial given the disruption in the domestic poultry market over the past three years.
