The Humane Society of the United States today released two undercover videos that it says document “unequivocal proof of the inherent and extreme abuse associated with gestation create confinement,” at Oklahoma facilities owned by Seaboard Foods and Prestage Farms, the organization said in a news release.

The videos largely document injuries and sores that HSUS says are the result of gestation crate confinement, and behaviors that the organization chalks up to frustration at confinement, such as biting at the bars of the crates. HSUS also noted a Seaboard employee was seen smacking the pigs’ genitals, jabbing at their eyes and hitting them with gate rods.

The group also noted the “filthy” conditions under which the pigs were kept at both facilities.

Noting that Seaboard has a policy of using “the most humane practices” posted on its website, HSUS also has filed complaints with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission alleging deception by the company.

HSUS concluded its release with a call for the end of the use of gestation crates.

David Eaheart, a spokesman for Seaboard Foods, told Meatingplace that the company would have a statement later in the day. Representatives for Prestage Farms were not available for comment.
