The group Compassion Over Killing, which advocates a vegetarian diet, released this week a video taken covertly by one if its members that showed gestation crate use at a Hawkeye Sow Center farm in Iowa that supplies hogs to Hormel.

“The most effective way consumers can stand up for animals and help stop the cruelty is to simply leave pigs, and all animals, off our plates,” the group said in a news release timed to oppose Iowa legislation that would prohibit such unauthorized video from being shot legally.

Hormel Foods, which does not own the farm where the video was shot, announced earlier this month it would end the use of sow gestation crates for hogs it uses to make its pork products by 2017.

“Hormel Foods is committed to animal care. We have a zero tolerance policy for the inhumane treatment of animals, and we remain dedicated to the highest standards for animal care and handling,” a company spokesman said in a statement emailed to Meatingplace today.

Compassion Over Killing, however, complained that Hormel’s welfare policy does not cover hundreds of independently run facilities that ultimately supply Hormel, like Hawkeye Sow Center.

“COK's video exposes standard industry practices that the industry is desperately trying to hide,” the group said in a news release. The video shows standard hog production practices such as sows in gestation crates and piglets being castrated.
