Through the fourth quarter of 2011, the chicken industry met the acceptable positive rate based on the agency's new Campylobacter performance standards (which lists an acceptable rate at 10.4 percent).

Overall, at 9.43 percent, the young chicken industry has been meeting the acceptable percent positive rate, although the young turkey industry is well above the standard at 4.22 percent (.79 percent acceptable).

The findings show that for Campylobacter, the performance standards and sample set criteria for tracking and reporting to establishments is applied to results from the smaller of the two laboratory Campylobacter sample portions (1 mL), which detects higher levels of contamination.
