Bon Appetit Management and the Humane Society of the United States issued a joint press release today announcing that the institutional food service company will phase out using any pork products from hogs housed in gestation crates by 2015.

“We’ve been asking the industry to do the right thing, but we can’t wait anymore,” said Fedele Bauccio, CEO of Bon Appetit Management, in the release.

Bon Appetit's announcement comes on the heels of one from McDonald's, that it would phase gestation crate users from its pork supply chain.

Hormel also recently unveiled plans to move to group housing for its hogs.

Bon Appetit Management went further to say that in the same time frame, 25 percent or more of its beef, pork and poultry would come from farms having received Animal Welfare Approved, Food Alliance, Humane Farm Animal Care or Global Animal Partnership certification. Bon Appetit considers these four certifications to be among the best for animal welfare.

Bon Appetit is an operator of food services at colleges and institutions nationwide.
