Senator Bob Atwater announced today he will not seek re-election in 2012. He has served in the state senate since 2004.

In a statement, Atwater said: “I’ve really enjoyed working on behalf of my constituents in Chatham, Durham and Lee counties. I have given the task my very best effort, and I leave with my head held high. I tried to conduct myself at all times in a manner that would reflect favorably upon my constituents. I will forever be grateful for the trust the citizens placed in me. I wish to express gratitude to my family for the many sacrifices they willingly made to support my public service. Further, I wish to gratefully recognize the interest, support and trust that Speaker Joe Hackney invested in me over the years.”

Senator Atwater served as past Chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Committee. He is a strong supporter of public education, agriculture, environment and economic development issues.

Democratic leaders wished him well.

Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt: “Bob has been a great member of the senate. He’s so passionate about the people he represents, and he’s brought a lot to the table.”

House Minority Leader Joe Hackney: "I have been proud to work with Sen. Atwater in the General Assembly, particularly when we partnered to work on matters of interest to the people of Chatham County. He has been unwavering in his support for the people of his district and a voice of reason among his peers from both parties. We will miss his representation and hope he enjoys his retirement."

Governor Beverly Perdue: “Bob Atwater never forgot who sent him to Raleigh. Bob looked for ways the state could help the people of his district. He was a tireless advocate for our schools and for ways to create jobs and aid farmers in his community and in North Carolina.”

Rep. Mickey Michaux: “It has been a distinct pleasure to work with Sen. Bob Atwater. He is attuned to the problems in Durham, and he has worked closely with the Durham delegation to help solve them. People in Durham have benefitted from his service.”

Sen. Bill Purcell: “He’s certainly going to be missed by his district and the state of North Carolina. He is an individual of high character, and he’s done a great job.”

Rep. Larry Hall: “He’s been the stabilizing influence and one of the most strategic thinkers in our delegation. He has always made sure our delegation was responsive to our constituents. I personally have relied on him to get a good sense of what the Senate’s position was on issues that came to the Souse. We are going to miss him. He is a great guy. He is a selfless guy and is always concerned about the people.”

NC Secretary of Commerce Keith Crisco: “Sen. Atwater has always been a tireless worker in his efforts to bring jobs and economic development to his district. Sen. Atwater, teaming effectively with Rep. Joe Hackney, has been particularly active and engaged in matters related to resolving the challenges with Townsends and its impact on the area.”
