USDA reported 1.82 million cattle were marketed during January, up two percent from January 2011 and above analysts’ expectations that marketings would remain nearly unchanged from a year ago.

In its monthly Cattle on Feed report, USDA estimated cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.8 million head on Feb. 1, 2012. The inventory was 2 percent above a year ago and on par with a Dow Jones survey of analysts’ pre-report projections.

Placements in feedlots during January totaled 1.85 million, 2 percent below January 2011. Net placements were 1.77 million head. Placements also came in close to what analysts were expecting.

During January, there were 445,000 cattle and calves placed on feed weighing less than 600 pounds. There were 430,000 placed on feed weighing 600-699 pounds and 525,000 placed on feed weighing 700-799 pounds. There were 447,000 placed on feed weighing more than 800 pounds.

Marketings of fed cattle for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head during 2011 represented 87.7 percent of all cattle marketed from feedlots in the United States, up from 84.6 percent during 2010.
