Governor Perdue asks for public input on picking judges

Gov. Bev Perdue today encouraged her fellow North Carolinians to attend public hearings to be held by the Judicial Nominating Commission in March. Participants at the three meetings held across the state can offer suggestions on the qualities and characteristics judges should possess.
The first hearing will be held next Monday in Asheville, followed by sessions in Greenville and Chapel Hill.
Last year Gov. Perdue took a giant step toward taking politics out of judicial nominations by issuing an executive order to create the commission. The panel will screen and nominate candidates for vacancy appointments on the N.C. Superior Court, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. The Governor was joined in the announcement by Republican and Democratic former chief justices of the N.C. Supreme Court.
“We have taken politics out of the equation in picking our state’s most influential legal servants,” Gov. Perdue said. “Now we want to hear from the public about the qualities they want to see in our judges.”
The hearing schedule and locations are:
Monday, March 5 – Asheville, 2-4 p.m. at the UNC Asheville Sherrill Center (Mountain View Conference Room #417)
Tuesday, March 13 – Greenville, 2-4 p.m. at the ECU Murphy Center (Harvey Hall, enter through Maynard Lobby)
Thursday, March 22 – Chapel Hill, 2-4 p.m. at the UNC Center for School Leadership (Room #111)
