Officials in Nash County, N.C., are continuing their support of a proposed poultry processing plant, despite word last month that Sanderson Farms is holding off on construction of the facility for now.

The Nash County Board of Commissioners yesterday voted 5-2 to continue to back the delayed project, citing the need for the more than 1,000 jobs the plant is expected to bring to the area when it eventually opens. The unemployment rate in Nash County was 11 percent in December, the same month that Sanderson Farms formally purchased the land for the plant a few miles north of the line separating Nash County and Wilson County.

Opponents continued voicing concerns that the plant threatens the safety of local drinking water and could cause other environmental damage. The proposed plant is also the subject of at least two lawsuits seeking to block its construction, which Sanderson Farms has put on hold until grain prices stabilize and the company can reduce its debt.
