Egg sets, chick placements continue descent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 197 million eggs in incubators during the week ende March 3, down 5 percent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 percent.
Broiler growers in the program placed 163 million chicks for meat production during the week, down 3 percent from last year.
Cumulative placements through March 3 were 1.45 billion, down 4 percent from the same period a year earlier.
