U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) announced that the Senate today approved an amendment to the Surface Transportation bill authorizing $134 million for a ferry program important to North Carolina. The provision authorizes $67 million in FY2012 and in FY2013 for the Ferry Boat Discretionary (FBD) Program.

“I am very pleased that funding for this critical program was added to the Surface Transportation bill today,” said Hagan. “Ferries are an important lifeline for many of our coastal communities, and this provision ensures vital funding assistance for the construction of ferry boats and terminal facilities.”

In the past four years, six North Carolina projects received $10.1 million from the Ferry Boat Discretionary Program. The Senate is expected to approve the Surface Transportation bill as early as tomorrow.
