At R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company it is a guiding principle and belief that adult tobacco consumers have a right to be fully and accurately informed about the risks of serious diseases, the significant differences in the comparative risks of different tobacco and nicotine-based products, and the benefits of quitting. This information should be based on sound science. The report released by the Tobacco Product Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) underscores the importance and relevance of this principle.

During the past two years, Reynolds Tobacco has provided thousands of pages of information on the development and marketing of the company’s dissolvable tobacco products to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and TPSAC. Additionally, Reynolds Tobacco made presentations to the FDA and to TPSAC during its dissolvable meetings.

Reynolds Tobacco’s Camel Dissolvables are smokeless tobacco products — they are not candy or mints as some have erroneously described them. They are made with finely milled tobacco. The packaging is child-resistant and is clearly labeled “dissolvable tobacco.” They are sold alongside other tobacco products, their sale is age-restricted and they are taxed at the same federal and state rate as other smokeless tobacco products. Thirty percent of the front and back of Camel Dissolvables labels are dedicated to government-mandated health warnings.

Reynolds Tobacco welcomes opportunities to provide accurate information about the company’s dissolvable tobacco products to public health officials, government or other interested parties. Input from all stakeholders, including tobacco manufacturers, is critical to establishing a science-based regulatory framework for dissolvable tobacco products and the tobacco industry.
