The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is hosting a Grower Information Session for farmers interested in selling commodities to Lowes Foods and MDI. This is the second of three meetings across the state.

9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 28

Grocery stores, restaurants and food suppliers are trying to meet growing consumer demand for locally sourced foods. This trend provides new market opportunities for farmers and food businesses. The “buy-local” trend continues to gain momentum, with more and more grocery stores and restaurants using farm and farmers names in their in-store promotional materials. NCDA&CS marketing specialists help team up farmers and food businesses in support of the state’s nearly $70 billion agriculture and agribusiness industry.

The session will cover the requirements Lowes Foods and MDI have for buying from farmers, including having liability insurance and Good Agricultural Practices certification. Marketing specialists will give a presentation on how to become GAP certified along with other grower information. Any farmer interested in marketing products to Lowes Food or MDI is invited to attend.

Lowes Foods is a Winston-Salem based chain, with 100 grocery stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

MDI, which stands for Merchants Distributors Inc., is a privately owned wholesale grocery distributor serving several states.
