Jones urges quick action on new farm bill

U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) has joined 38 of his colleagues to stress the importance of signing a new farm bill into law as soon as possible. In a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the bipartisan group expressed the need to avoid a short-term extension of the 2008 Farm Bill, which expires this year, and instead enact a long-term fiscally responsible measure that will provide certainty for America’s food and fiber producers.
“The farmers in Eastern North Carolina and across the nation deserve our best effort,” said Jones. “It is important for Congress to pass a new long-term bill this year so those in agricultural production and agribusiness can move forward with certainty about how to plan their operations.”
The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 is set to expire on September 30, 2012. As part of the planting decision process, farmers need the certainty that a multi-year farm bill provides for future planning.
