serving growers in Tidewater area

RALEIGH -- The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has hired Virginia “Jenny” Johnson as regional agronomist for Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Martin, Pamlico, Tyrrell and Washington counties. Johnson is based at the Tidewater Research Station in Plymouth.

“We’re glad to have Jenny Johnson join our staff,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “She has field experience in the traditional crops of our Coastal Plain, such as cotton, peanuts, soybeans and tobacco. She will be a valuable resource for growers seeking to optimize crop nutrients or manage plant-parasitic nematodes.”

Johnson earned her bachelor’s degree in agriculture extension education and master’s degree in crop science from N.C. State University. She has conducted field tests, presented research findings and engaged in pest management endeavors such as scouting.

Regional agronomists are part of the Field Services Section of the NCDA&CS Agronomic Services Division. They provide advice on crop fertilization, nutrient management, lime needs, soil testing, plant tissue analysis, use of animal wastes and composts, nematode analysis, and testing of source water and nutrient solutions.

Johnson will be taking over duties previously handled by Kent Yarborough, who transferred to the upper Coastal Plain. To arrange a consultation, contact her by email at jenny.johnson@ncagr.gov or by office phone, 252-793-4118, ext. 122.
