DURHAM, N.C. – Amy Pickle, senior attorney for state policy at Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, has been appointed to the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission.

The governor appointed Pickle to the 19-member commission’s public-at-large seat. She will be sworn in to a six-year term May 10.

The commission is responsible for adopting rules for the protection, preservation and enhancement of North Carolina’s air and water resources. Specifically, the commission oversees and adopts rules for several divisions of the Department of Natural Resources, including the divisions of Air Quality, Land Resources, Water Quality and Water Resources.

"I appreciate the trust the governor has shown in me and I am honored to bring my years of experience in our state's environmental policy to the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission," said Pickle. "The commission is one of the most respected citizen agencies in our state and I look forward to working with them on the issues central to North Carolina's future."

Her experience at the Nicholas Institute provides her with the background and exposure to state and federal environmental programs and critical environmental policy issues that she can share with other commissioners, she added.

At Duke, Pickle’s research is focused on state and local environmental policy with an emphasis on water allocation, water quality, and governance. She has extensive experience in environmental policy development and environmental litigation, having served as assistant attorney general in the state and a senior attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center.
