CEFS to hold field day May 3 in Goldsboro

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems will hold a field day and open houses on May 3 at the center’s 2,000 acre Goldsboro farm. The events will showcase research and extension activities related to sustainable agriculture
The event is open to the public and advanced registration is required. The $10 fee includes a local foods dinner.
CEFS is a partnership of N.C. State University, N.C. A&T State University and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The CEFS mission is to develop and promote food and farming systems that protect the environment, strengthen local economies and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.
The field day will begin with a welcome at 1 p.m., followed by three tour cycles from 1:30-5:30 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to experience each of the tour areas, which include:
Tour 1: Biochar and soil/water studies at the Farming Systems Research Unit; outdoor swine facilities; and agroforestry
Tour 2: Bread wheats for the eastern U.S.; beneficial habitats; no-till organic corn production; and organic canola production
Tour 3: Vacuum system for removing flies from dairy cows; pasture-based and organic dairy production; pasture-based livestock education initiative; legumes in forage systems for nitrogen fixation; and winter annual legumes in coastal forage systems
Two open houses will be held at 11 a.m. on May 3. At the CEFS Small Farm Unit open house, visitors will take a self-guided tour and learn about research projects and production techniques on the certified-organic farm. A second open house about CEFS community efforts will meet at the Wayne County Public Library -- 1001 E. Ash St., Goldsboro -- where visitors will learn of partnerships to help build knowledge and skills through gardening and local food initiative models.
The field day will conclude following a 5:30 p.m. local foods dinner for registered guests.
