The State Farmers Market will celebrate the state’s strawberry crop at Strawberry Day Thursday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The annual event will feature fresh, local strawberries, free samples of a strawberry dessert, free strawberry recipes and nutritional information, and an appearance by Suzy the Strawberry.
In addition, aspiring bakers can participate in a strawberry dessert contest sponsored by the N.C. Strawberry Association.

The association will offer $225 in total prize money for the top entries. Desserts can be dropped off at the N.C. Seafood Restaurant between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Judging will begin at 9:30 a.m., and media are invited to attend. Dishes will be judged on flavor, appearance, quality and creative use of strawberries. After judging, winners will be announced at the Strawberry Day exhibit in the Farmers Building.

All entries must be in disposable containers and include the complete recipe with cooking instructions, along with the contestant’s name, address and telephone number. Each recipe must include at least two cups of N.C. strawberries, and strawberries must be a main ingredient.

The North Carolina strawberry season runs through June. North Carolina is the third largest producer of strawberries in the nation. In 2010, local strawberry production generated $24.3 million in cash receipts.
