Domino’s shareholders rejected a proposal by the Humane Society of the United States that the board of directors report on the feasibility of Domino’s ensuring that its pepperoni and ham come from producers that don’t use gestation stalls by October.

The shareholder vote was 80 percent against the resolution, 4 percent in favor and holders of 16 percent of the shares abstained, according to a Domino’s spokesman.

In the proxy materials for yesterday’s annual meeting, the board recommended shareholders vote against the proposal saying, “We believe this is an issue that should be addressed directly with producers and suppliers, not customers.”

The decision comes as big chains such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King have taken action to lean on their suppliers to stop using gestation stalls.

“We’ve had discussions with our suppliers over the years and we do pay attention to what the big burger companies are doing,” Domino’s Vice President, Communications Tim McIntyre told Meatingplace. “We still take the stance that we want to rely on animal experts, including the farmers who raise them, to provide us with the information and insight into what is the best, most humane and most productive way to raise animals meant for food.”
