Tim Hortons today called upon the pork industry and its suppliers to eliminate gestation stalls for sows and to develop clear plans and timelines by the end of the year to phase out the housing systems.

The company will give preferred sourcing to pork suppliers that have documented plans to phase-out the use of gestation stalls.

"We're calling for an end to gestation stalls for sows and to significantly increase the use of alternative housing systems for hens. We believe there are better, more humane and sustainable housing systems that can improve the quality of animals' lives," Paul House, president and CEO, and executive chairman of the company said in a news release. "Striking a balanced, realistic solution for the farming community, which will need to make significant investments in new buildings, is also essential, and we fully recognize this will take time."

The announcement comes just a week after Domino’s shareholders rejected a proposal by the Humane Society of the United States that the board of directors report on the feasibility of Domino’s ensuring that its pepperoni and ham come from producers that don’t use gestation stalls.

Tim Hortons joins McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King -- all of which have taken action to lean on their suppliers to stop using gestation stalls.
