Dr. Dan Engeljohn reportedly has been tapped to replace Ken Petersen, who is retiring as assistant administrator of the Office of Field Operations (OFO) for USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS), according to the North American Meat Processors Association/National Meat Association "Lean Trimmings" newsletter.

An FSIS spokesman said he was unable to provide further information on the moves.

In his new position, Engeljohn will facilitate inspection and enforcement activities nationwide, including labeling requirements. He previously served as the OFO Deputy Assistant Administrator, but was mostly recently the assistant administrator of FSIS's Office of Policy & Program Development.

Engeljohn represents FSIS on the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods and is the FSIS spokesperson on food irradiation issues. He also serves as an adjunct assistant professor of nutrition on the graduate faculty at Howard University and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on human nutrition.
