Two opponents of the proposed Sanderson Farms chicken processing plant in Nash County, N.C., have won their parties’ primary races for a seat on the county’s board of commissioners, the Rocky Mount Telegram reported.

Democratic primary winner Bert Daniel is co-chairman of the Nash County Landowners Association, which has opposed the proposed plant.

Republican Lisa Stone Barnes defeated the Republican incumbent and will now face off against Daniel. She said voters have sent a signal they don’t want the plant built in the county.

The board of commissioners in March voted 5-2 to continue to back the project, which Sanderson has said is on hold until grain prices stabilize and the company can reduce debt.

Daniel said, if elected, he hopes to influence other board members, especially fellow Democrats, which have a majority of seats on the board.
